What is ADHD?

It depends on who you ask and what day it is! How ADHD presents in an individual is as unique as a snowflake and can differ for that individual from day to day. To some ADHD is a debilitating mental disorder that affects their ability to focus, regulate emotions, and control impulses that negatively impacts executive functioning. To others it’s a superpower that ignites creativity and hyper focus on high interest projects and gives them joy. You could have a hyperactive body that needs to move or a hyperactive mind that doesn’t stop. It could be a little bit of everything punctuated by heavy dashes of procrastination, perfectionism, overwhelm, anxiety, and/or rejection sensitivity to contend with. ADHD is as unique as the individual who has it, so it is difficult to quantify. Regardless of presentation, ADHD is a developmental disorder that is classified as a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and can be categorized as mild, moderate, or severe based on degree of impairment as listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental disorder (DSM-5). ADHD is very real and can be very challenging.

​ADHD life coaching is a key support you can use for tapping into your creativity and acting toward positive change that will uniquely work for you. When you are ready and open to change, coaching can help you move from where you are to where you want to be through evoking awareness that leads to plans for growth. It’s a deeply personal process as only you know the obstacles and challenges you face each day and what strengths you can use to overcome them. A skilled coach can help you identify and focus on your core values and say goodbye to self-sabotaging thoughts that no longer serve you. It’s empowering to develop proactive concrete plans that can help you get organized, better cope, calm rejection sensitivity, end procrastination and manage distractions that negatively impact your work and life. Coaching can help you pull from within to create healthier habits, identify workarounds that are optimal for you, and find new resources to help build critical skills that enable you to reach your goals.

I wasn’t correctly diagnosed with ADHD until my late 40’s after I read an article on ADHD and how it presents differently in women and asked my therapist about it as I checked all the boxes. It was great news to understand what I was dealing with and how to get help, but I also felt angry about the lost time and struggles that might have been avoided had I been properly diagnosed earlier. I've embraced and used my ADHD strengths to earn top performer status instead of hiding it and fighting it as a weakness. That's what inspired me to become a Certified ADHD Life Coach (CALC) with the iACT Center. I understand the struggle. It's real, but coaching can really help.
